Description: STATED FIRST AMERICAN EDITION. 1812. 3/4 LEATHER. HEAVY SURFACE WEAR TO FRONT HINGE LEATHER WITH SPLITTING ALONG THE TOP 1/2 OF THIS 5.25" TALL VOLUME (PHOTO 3). REAR HINGE HAS MINOR WEAR ONLY AND FRONT HINGE CONTINUES TO HOLD AT THIS POINT. When I first opened the book, only the first inch had split and now it is over 2 inches, so some stabilizing to the board hinge will be required. THERE ARE A FEW PAGES WITH LIGHT PENCIL MARKS IN THE MARGINS THAT ARE EITHER DASHES OR HEARTS OR BRACKETS ((PHOTO 3,4,5). ONE CORNER BEND FOUND (PHOTO 6) BUT THERE MAY BE MORE. SOILING ON PAGES 63-64 (PHOTO 5) OCCASIONAL FOXING FOR THE FIRST 155 OR SO PAGES WITH A SPILL OF SOME KIND ON PAGES 158-159 (photo 10) THAT RESULTED IN LIGHTER STAINING FOR A COUPLE OF LEAVES IN EITHER DIRECTION OF THE SPILL. THIS IS FOLLOWED BY A FEW SOILING SPOTS AND THEN HEAVY STAINING TO THE LAST TWO LEAVES OF PRINT (PHOTO 11) Overall, this over 200 year old classic has a stable binding with no tears and any markings could be easily erased if you so choose. The book is a small 3" wide by 5.25" tall volume and repair of that front hinge should not be too costly. The binding is of otherwise excellent quality This is only the second book by Lord Byron published in the United States with "English bards and Scotch reviewers" published in 1811. This is one of two 1812 stated First American Editions printed by William Fry. One shows only Moses Thomas as Publisher with this edition listing several publishers in several locations. I have found no evidence of any priority given to either edition. THIS IS ONLY THE FIRST TWO CANTOS OF CHILDE HAROLD'S PILGRIMAGE AS THE REST WAS WRITTEN LATER IN 1816 AND 1818. This was published when Lord Byron was only 24 years old. PLEASE USE ZOOM FUNCTION ON ALL PHOTOS. PLEASE NOTE: For book sales, I virtually always include a vinyl bag tightly wrapped on the exterior. This is an attempt to prevent any USPS employee from opening the package for inspection as it would be time consuming for them to repackage it. This is done simply because my packaging is done more carefully than their repackaging and also to protect the book from the elements. The vinyl bag covers cardboard protection and you can simply cut the bag open (carefully) and remove the contents. The cardboard protection is also typically held with tape and cutting in the obvious places will allow the cardboard to pop right open, exposing the book (in another protective vinyl bag). Using this method, you should be able to open any book I send in under a minute. No "buzz saw" is required. Thank you
