Description: Vintage 1956 Photo Portrait / 1967 Photogravure of ROBERT OPPENHEIMER by YOUSUF KARSH. 9-1/2 inches x 12 inches Canadian photographer Yousef Karsh shot this photograph of American physicist Robert Oppenheimer in 1956. The photo portrait was included in a Karsh-authorized bound photogravure portfolio dated 1967. The photo is an authentic photogravure, meaning it was printed from an etched plate made from Karsh's original negative. It is not a modern reprint. The print and paper are beautiful. In his introduction printed in the portfolio, Karsh wrote about the quality of the photogravure plates. Here is an excerpt: "...for the first time, the photographs which have been my life's work were reproduced by a mechanical process...with complete fidelity. So true is the result...difficult to distinguish between these photogravure plates and the hand-printed originals from my darkroom." He also wrote that the photogravure portraits display "the fine details, the subtle gradations, the delicate nuances" that reveal the "underlying character" of the subjects. Engraved and printed in the Netherlands by Enschedé, Haarlem for Thomas Nelson & Sons. © University of Toronto Press, 1967 9.5 inch x 12 inch paper size. Full bleed except for a 1/16 inch white vertical area on left side, which will be covered when framed (or it can be trimmed). Back of photogravure is blank. Includes a 2-sided Robert Oppenheimer biography sheet. Yousuf Karsh (1908-2002), a Canadian photographer of Armenian heritage, is considered by many to be one of the most famous and accomplished portrait photographers of the 20th century. He is known for photographs of some of the period's most important figures including statesmen, artists, musicians, authors, scientists and many others. Sir Winston Churchill. Marilyn Monroe. Albert Einstein. Audrey Hepburn. And...Robert Oppenheimer. Karsh photographs are bold and closely cropped and his lighting is dramatic. J. Robert Oppenheimer (1904-1967) was an American theoretical physicist and director of the Manhattan Project's Los Alamos Laboratory in New Mexico during world War II. The lab was tasked with developing the first nuclear weapons, which were used against Japan in the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. He is often called the "father of the atomic bomb." He later lobbied for international control of nuclear power to avert nuclear proliferation. His career was chronicled in the 2023 film "Oppenheimer." Lovely. Ready to frame. peachtree vintage.
