Celebrities including the Prince Regent, poet Lord Byron and actress Sarah Siddons attended her social gatherings. Monckton was known to welcome her guests while seated, which the artist, Joshua Reynolds, echoes in this painting. & Engraved by John Murphy, ca. 1748–1820, British, after artwork by Francis Wheatley, 1747–1801 -- The Departure from Brighton, originally painted in 1796 -- In 1793 France declared war on Britain and speculation about a possible invasion led to the establishment of temporary military tented camps all along the south coast. The transformation of Brighton into a resort by 1780, and the popularity of the town among the aristocracy and the officer class of the army, made the town a strategic base for Britain's defences. As North Laine lay close to the town and land was relatively cheap, a number of sites were chosen for semi-permanent barracks, as housing for soldiers. Prior to this, virtually all prints (and engravings) were produced as illustrations to be included in a manuscript, book, newspaper, or pamphlet. Therefore, a vast majority of original prints have been over the years removed from these original sources. Prints are produced using many different techniques: relief printing (woodcut & wood engraving), intaglio printing (steel & copper plate engraving, drypoint, aquatint, etc), and planographic printing (lithography, serigraphy, inkjet, laser, etc.). While the commercial value of a print depends on such factors as age, rarity, and condition, the real value of a print is its tie to its history and/or its esthetic beauty.
