Description: • For Your Consideration: • A lot of three (3) VINTAGE Jazz Novels: • 1. “WORLD IN A JUG” by ROLAND GANT (Hardcover, 1961) • 2. “YOUNG MAN WITH A HORN” by DOROTHY BAKER (Trade PB, 1961) • 3. “THE SOUND” by ROSS RUSSELL (Mass Market PB, 1962) • Title #1: “WORLD IN A JUG: A Novel of a Jazzman” (Vanguard Press, 1961) (Hardcover, First US Edition) • BY ROLAND GANT • “A REALL GASSUH.” —LOUIS ARMSTRONG • “LARRY ALDEN, descendant on his mother's side from a proud Creole family, inherits only one New Orleans' characteristic—the love of the blues and the people who wail them. A renegade from everything his staid family represents, LARRY leaves medical school and begins the international circuit that from the twenties on has set European and American feet tapping. An unhappy marriage, a disastrous affair with a young Parisian, and the death of two Negro jazz musicians leaves LARRY, at fifty, rootless and confused…. A simple story told with restraint.”—KIRKUS REVIEWS • “LARRY…recalling friends he had known: BIX, TESCH, PINETOP, FATS, BUNNY BERIGAN. ‘We plunked and strummed our way through our youth,’ LARRY remembered, ‘rash and strident, confident and free from tradition in the way we lived just as much as in the music we made.’ “The way LARRY lived slammed at convention…rising late and going to bed around five in the morning, rarely seeing the sun. It was a world of smoke-filled cellars, music-filled years, yet with empty hours that stretched into loneliness. When women failed him, he wooed whiskey instead. When life began to fail him, he found a different kind of music—in…a love that brought fresh chords of understanding to LARRY and a golden note to the world of jazz.” —THE PUBLISHER • “The skill with which ROLAND GANT has caught not only the smoky, hepped-up, private world of this legendary cult, but also the American idiom of speech and thought that is its only natural framework, makes his novel a tour de force of the first order. MR. GANThas given us something almost unique in fiction: an authentic glimpse into the rhythms of a jazzman’s mind.” —PETER GREEN, THE DAILY TELEGRAPH • “Like its subject, it swings, which is a rarity among jazz novels.”—MIKE GOTHARD, KENSINGTON NEWS & WEST LONDON TIMES • “Just about the best fictional work on jazz yet.”—OWEN BRYCE, DISC • “Fascinating.”—THE TIMES LITERARY SUPPLEMENT • “Imagined with remarkable verisimilitude.” —THE DAILY MAIL • “In a way it is like coming back to SCOTT FITZGERALD, of whom ROLAND GANT has the elegant melancholy, the subtle despair and deep wryness, colored with poetry…. The reader…has himself entered the story…the story has entered him, without knowing how or when the fusion and the alchemy was brought about.”—L’INFORMANTION • “The tone is extraordinarily skillful…. MR. GANT never puts a foot wrong technically…. MR. GANT has written the life of a sad, kind, lost, almost first-rate jazz pianist, in a style that never becomes pastiche.” —JOHN DAVENPORT, THE OBSERVER • “ROLAND GANT has captured extremely well the combination of success and failure in a white pianist and singer…. It is a miracle of talent…. A fine novel which gives much food for thought.” —CLAUDE MUARIACE, LE FIGARO • “What a great book. I was taken under the wing into the nostalgic time when jazz music was at its peak. I’m the kind of person who sometimes thinks I was born in the wrong era and this book dropped me at its doorstep. The story is told by an aged jazz musician…. The character essence is so unique and multidimensional…. I enjoyed this book throughout. Jazz isn’t really my jam but I just loved the zest of the era. It gets me so excited.” —SPORTYROD, GOODREADS REVIEW •• Title #2: “YOUNG MAN WITH A HORN” (Sentry Edition | Houghton Mifflin 1961) (Trade Paperback, Third Edition Thus) • BY DOROTHY BAKER • “YOUNG MAN WITH A HORN is practically perfect. You feel, and feel deeply, the atmosphere BAKER describes, the music RICK and his friends make, the fanatic devotion of artists who can’t take their music or leave it but must take it and take it hard. Between the lines, BAKER somehow gets a great many true things said about American life, its tempo, its elements of frustration, its unique and unquestioning vitality.” —CLIFTON FADIMAN, THE NEW YORKER • “DOROTHY BAKER’S YOUNG MAN WITH A HORN is widely regarded as the first jazz novel, and it pulses with the music that defined an era. BAKER took her inspiration from the artistry—though not the life—of legendary horn player BIX BEIDERBECKE, and the novel went on to be adapted into a successful movie starring KIRK DOUGLAS, LAUREN BACALL, and DORIS DAY.” —NEW YORK REVIEW OF BOOKS • “A clear-minded, informed, coldly rational study of a swing addict.” —HAROLD STRAUSS, NEW YORK TIMES (1938) • “The first jazz novel, YOUNG MAN WITH A HORN, broke new ground when it was published in 1938 not just for its subject matter but for its portrayal of friendships across the racial divide. RICK MARTIN, a white boy with ‘a basic need to make music,’ teaches himself to play the piano and then the horn, ‘a trumpet, if there’s anybody here doesn’t know what kind of horn a horn is’…• “The prose is as hardboiled as any 1930s gangster movie, pulsing with the life of the jazz solos that tumble from RICK’s trumpet, as well as the vibrancy and talent of his black musician friends. A pitch-perfect evocation of the music that defined an age.”—FREYA McCLEMENTS, IRISH TIMES • “MRS. BAKER knows her music from the inside; nobody who didn’t could describe the psychic experiences of those who play, or the very shape and movement of the music they make, so thrillingly and so well.” —N. L. ROTHMAN, SATURDAY REVIEW • “YOUNG MAN WITH A HORN is a great book, beautifully conceived and masterfully written. There is little else that can be said in praise of any book.” —NEW YORK AMSTERDAM NEWS • “I first read this book when I was twelve. I loved it because it did not condescend or sugarcoat. It took me inside the music—it made me want to find an instrument and learn it.” —JESSE KORNBLUTH • “The great merit of MRS. BAKER’s novel is the faithfulness, the fine restraint, and the deliberate tough with which she makes the desperate search of the artist a real, infinitely true thing.” —WILLIAM SOSKIN, BOOKS ••• Title #3: “THE SOUND: A Novel”(A MacFadden Book, 1962) (Mass Market Paperback, First Edition Thus) • BY ROSS RUSSELL • “Only a few books have set down any part of the real jazz world...the drive that pushes an occasional genius...the tawdry grime of quick love in a nightclub dressing room...the dedication of a few musicians, and the mediocrity of most run-of-the-hall sidemen...the choking stranglehold of heroin on a trumpeter who is a national hero…. Of the few novels that have seen the jazz world form the inside, THE SOUND is unique. It’s convincing, it’s honest, and it pounds to an absorbing finish.”—THE PUBLISHER • “RUSSELL’s prose, plain as a dishrag, never gets between his material and the reader. Several scenes and characters are indelible: [The protagonist’s] collapse in a nightclub because of an overdose of bad heroin; his filthy, cold walkup apartment in Harlem; his theft of a trumpet from a retired, old-line jazz musician; a for-once wholly credible white bandleader, who is a neat cross between WOODY HERMAN and STAN KENTON; a cool, languorous white camp follower; and Fat Girl, a monstrous homosexual drug peddler.” —WHITNEY BALLIETT, THE NEW YORKER • “ROSS RUSSELL has written one of the very few fictional treatments of the jazz world that has validity.” —RALPH J. GLEASON, SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE • “Here, at last, is a comprehensible and moving description of the hip world…. Strangely moving story…[with] simplicity and power.” —CHICAGO SUN TIMES • “The story is pretty routine—the ups and downs of jazz musicians in NYC and LA in the early 1960s. It’s the writing that makes this stand out for me—practically bursting with atmosphere and lots of sharp dialogue. And no wonder: The author is a respected jazz music historian & scholar and has published several well-regarded nonfiction books on the subject. All this plus what must be one of the very first uses in print of the term ‘hipster’!”—HENRY P., PAPERBACK SWAP (WEBSITE) • • For other details about these books, please see below. • TITLE 1: “WORLD IN A JUG: A Novel of a Jazzman” AUTHOR: ROLAND GANT TYPE: HARDCOVER PAGES: 220 PUBLISHER, LOCALE, & YEAR: Vanguard Press (New York), 1961 FIRST PUBLISHED IN THE UK: 1960 EDITION: First (US) Edition* *RE: On the Copyright Page, the statement “Reprinted with permission”—& with no later editions listed.NOTE: This copy is NOT ex-library NOR a book-club edition.
