PITCAIRN 1959 "RANGITANE" VISIT POSTCARD RATE 2d TO NZ SCARCE

Description: **** P I T C A I R N I S L A N D S **** [EB] 2 1 F E B . 1 9 5 9 New Zealand Shipping Co's (RNZCo) "RANGITANE" calls at Pitcairn Franking: 4 x QEII 1957 ½d definitive (= 2d PostCard rate) Scarce sepia postcard marking one of the regular visits of the NZSCo Flagship, R.M.V. RANGITANE, to Pitcairn Island on 21 February 1959, while en route to England via the Panama Canal. The postcard, sent by a passenger to friends in New Zealand, was processed by Pitcairn postal officials (either on board ship, or ashore) at the 2d Commonwealth Post Card Rate, and taken to its destination by the Shaw Savill Co. liner, ATHENIC, which called in at Pitcairn the next day (22 Feb.), bound for Auckland, New Zealand. The NZSCo., a British Company, had been shipping frozen New Zealand mutton to the U.K. since 1909, and after WWII, agreed to include remote Pitcairn Island on their 10-to-12-week turnaround service calls from the U.K. to New Zealand, via the Panama Canal. Thus four "Rangi" passenger-cargo liners, Rangitane, Rangitoto, Rangitata, and Ranjitiki maintained constant, friendly visits to the Island for 15 years (1954-1968). Each ship made dozens of stops during this period, and many crew members and Islanders became fast friends as a result. The ships took mail off the island, and delivered the Islanders' mail, and all types of supplies, equipment, and lumber. POST CARD CONDITION: Pristine, fresh - excellent condition. There are NO rips, tears, wrinkles, or age marks, and only slightly bumped corners, quite impressive for a 65-year-old paperboard collectible.
