Description: Warm greetings from Japan. Thank you very much for visiting our listing. Museum quality Over 100 year old vintage ukulele Hard case included In the new Ukulele Encyclopedia book. The ukulele was made by Jonaah Kumalae, a ukulele maker who was originally an ivory craftsman on the Big Island of Hawaii. It won a design award at the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition in San Francisco, the year before Martin began making ukuleles in earnest. This exhibition was the catalyst for the ukulele to become a big hit in the United States. Not only the ukulele but also Hawaii itself attracted attention from all over the United States, and this sparked what is called the first Hawaii boom. One of the characteristics of old ukuleles is that they do not have fingerboards. In other words, the frets are hammered directly into the neck. This means that the strings are inevitably quite high and the tune is easily thrown out of tune. Fingerboards began to be added to Hawaiian ukuleles in the late 1910s . Another characteristic of older ukuleles is that they use wooden push-in pegs called friction pegs. Another characteristic is that the strings are strung directly on the wooden bridge. This ukulele is the same model as the one featured in the New Ukulele Encyclopedia, and is a rare item that is rarely seen even in ukulele specialty stores. This is a museum-quality Kumalae from about 100 years ago , making it a very valuable ukulele.
