🔥 Vintage Modern Mid Century Figural Abstract Oil Painting

Description: This is a fascinating and expressive Vintage Modern Mid Century Figural Abstract Oil Painting on Artist Board, attributed to Mid-Century California Modernist painter and printmaker, Leonard Edmondson (1916 - 2002.) This artwork depicts a colorful and abstracted tableau, with several cubistic and unusual figural silhouettes standing out amongst the chaotic drips and splashes of pigment. This artwork does not appear to be signed on the front but has numerous examples of writing (in French), on the verso. Perhaps you can make sense of what this writing means? (Photo 24 displays an example of Edmondson's known artistic work, which is strikingly similar to this painting.) Approximately 14 x 17 inches (including frame.) Actual artwork is approximately 9 x 12 inches. This piece likely dates to the 1950's - 1960's. Good overall condition for age and storage, with some mild scuffing, edge wear, and soiling to the frame. Additionally, there is some subtle separation and splitting in the corners of the original vintage period wood frame (please see photos.) He studied at Los Angeles City College, and in 1937 entered the University of California at Berkeley, receiving his B.A. in 1940 and his M.A. in 1942. Concurrently with beginning teaching in 1947 at the Pasadena City College, Edmondson became absorbed with Klee and Kandinsky and their influence can be seen in his imagery.He took a class in etching in 1951 from Ernest Freed and the following year his print, Heralds of Inquiry, won an award at an annual exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum.
