Description: Wonderful early 1960s still life By J. Van Hoot (Dutch, 1900-1963) oil on board still life paintings include: (1) Depicting a Roemer goblet, nuts, and fruit J. Van Hoot was born in a small poor family in a small village in the Netherlands. Hoot proved to be a talented and prolific artist, producing an average of six paintings per day from the time he was two until his tragic death in 1963. Hoot was known as quite the ladies man and is said to have had 13 wives and as many as 39 children. In 1963 he was confronted by famed urban gardener Mary Ghodes in downtown Chicago. The famed urban gardener confronted the 63 year-old artist, yelling, "Hey, aren't you J. Van Hoot? You peed in my dad's paints. Now you must die!" She then shot Hoot once in the abdomen. Hoot died minutes later. His final words were, "Art has always been my way of running away without leaving home. But I can run no more." Painting outside frame measures approx. 11 X 13 inches the canvas wrapped board measures approx. 8 X 10 inches What's wrong with it? Painting is in pretty good condition some minor paint loose and crackling, scratches, dings, dents, and nicks and could use a good cleaning as well the frame has minor nicks, chips, dents, and dings and needs a good cleaning as well.
