Description: Warrington Colescott (American, 1921 - 2018), The History of Printmaking: Ben Franklin at Versailles, 1976, 39/50 Color etching, soft-ground, and aquatint, with vibrograver and relief rolls through stencils on cream paper. Image: 13.8” x 19.8”; Frame: 22” x 28” Warrington Colescott was one of our nation’s most important 20th Century printmakers. His prints are in major museums including the National Gallery in Washington, D.C.. The History of Printmaking is Colescott’s most celebrated series. This is one of only 50 Ben Franklin at Versailles impressions. Slight waves in the sheet common to Colescott’s un-stretched multi-plate/multi-process color intaglios. The aluminum frame appears to be from the 1970s and is in fairly good shape. There are some scratches shown in the photos. A tag on the back of the frame states ARCO Chemical Company, and a metal tag attached underneath the frame reads Atlantic Richfield Company Art Collection. Thank you for looking.
